1 Privacy protection is also known as WHOIS protection or private domain registration. Privacy protection can be important in many cases because spammers can mine data from the WHOIS database to find your private or personal contact information. They use this information to send you SPAM or simply sell your email address and other information they collected to the highest bidders. Privacy protection is done by providing an alternate information in the WHOIS database, rather than yours.

2 Godaddy gives free domain privacy with 5 (or more) domain registrations.

Most of these domain registrars also offer some of the best domain web hosting packages but their customer services and technical support in terms of web hosting may not be as good as companies created mainly to provide web hosting services.

Over 4 million new web domain registrations take place per month. Grab yourselves the domain name you have been thinking about before it is too late.

Hi Ell, it looks like our table was not aligned correctly on non-Firefox and some older IE browsers… It has been fixed now and if you look again, the above table says $9/year for domain privacy from Godaddy. It is $8.99 to be exact but surely not free like from Netfirms. Also note that the free privacy from Netfirms are only for .COM and .NET domains and does not apply to .ORG TLDs.

However, you can get free domain privacy from Godaddy if you order 5 or more domains in one checkout process.

You should also distinguish between free Whois Privacy Protection “during first time registration only”, versus registrars that offer it for free even for repeated domain renewals.

For example, Namecheap only offers free privacy during registration, and then you have to pay for it upon domain renewal. Compare it with Domainmonster.com that offers free privacy year after year.

wetpaks, you are correct about Netfirms giving the free privacy for only the first year. If you are thinking about longer terms or for multiple domains, Namecheap and Godaddy are the better deals. A .COM domain at domainmonster.com cost GBP7.95 (about US$12.50) which is still more expensive than Namecheap or Godaddy because Namecheap.com charges only $2.88 per year for domain privacy after the first year while Godaddy offers free domain privacy for 5 domains and above.

        Jon,

It is NOT true that Netfirms gives free privacy only for the first year. Whois Privacy Protection is free of charge with Netfirms for the entire lifetime of the domain.

        Thanks,

        Netfirms

Maybe not, but why I can not buy domain name with your company more then 1 year? Looks like there is some catch

Domainmonster.com current reg price for .com is actually just $9.99 US Dollars + free whois privacy (no renewal needed), so it’s cheaper than Namecheap on the 2nd year. Anyway, my point was, in your table, perhaps you can put instead of “FREE” for Namecheap, put there “FREE for New Regs/$2.99 for renewals”. This is to separate it from registrars who actually offer “truly free” whois protection and no need to pay for whois protection renewals.

Thanks wetpaks for the info on domainmonster, and please do show us how you can get a .COM domain for US$9.99 inclusive of domain privacy. We are not seeing that price on their site. All we can see is their .COM price of £7.95 which is not exactly equivalent to US$9.99 (more like US$12+). We are even thinking of listing them on our list above in the future. They are indeed quite cheap if they can give $9.99 + domain privacy, year after year. As of now, we still think that Netfirms and Godaddy are the best deals in town.

I think ResellerClub should also be on that list.

From a Reseller’s perspective, they pretty much have everything covered. They go as low as $7.50 on domains with free privacy (on all years), DNS & Dom Fwding with the domain.

Till date, I haven’t seen any cheap gimmicks like Go Daddy and their hosting is quite cheap as well.

sounds good Ray, but don’t you need to have initial spending of at least $199 to get that kind of price?

I’m looking for a domain set-up with unlimited email box that I can also set up a ftp site and a website. I also don’t want to have any pop-ups attached to my website. Which domain would be best. I’m a designer and often have to transfer files over 100mb.

    I registered 2 domains with 1&1 – one .co.uk and one .com
I was told that I can only have WHOIS protection with the .co.uk address and not the .com one. Does anyone know any way I can protect the .com one now I have registered this address? Or should I cancel it and re-register it with another domain registar?

    • January 18th, 2010 at 09:14

Don’t cancel. Just transfer to a different registrar that offers WHOIS protection for .COMs like Netfirms or Godaddy (need to register at least 5 domains with if you want free whois protection with Godaddy).

How about a registar who doesn’t “auction” your domain name to third parties in foreign countries BEFORE its expired so they can hold it for ransom? You know the one {hint: NS} that simultaneously keeps you thinking your domain name has not expired by keeping it in your account manager with an expiration date a year into the future but when your website goes offline suddenly and you call they tell you the account number next to the expiration date is different! Any registars where you actually OWN your domain names and not just rent???
